Creating a Healthy Feeding Routine for My Kitten Lulu

The first time I saw Lulu chasing her food bowl across the kitchen floor, I realised feeding a kitten was going to be a bigger adventure than I expected. I thought I could just give her food whenever she seemed hungry, but I quickly learned that kittens don’t just need meals — they need rhythm, structure, and a sense of security. What started as chaos slowly turned into one of the most peaceful parts of our daily life.

The Chaos of the Early Days

In the beginning, our feeding schedule was a complete mess. Sometimes Lulu would eat at 8 a.m., sometimes at noon, sometimes late at night. I used to feed her whenever she meowed, thinking it was the right thing to do. What I didn’t know then was that cats meow for many reasons — boredom, attention, or even just curiosity. Lulu had learned quickly that I responded to her every sound with food, and soon enough she was “asking” for meals ten times a day. I started to notice her energy going up and down like a roller coaster, and her sleep schedule became irregular.

Learning Why Routine Matters

One day, I was scrolling through a cat care forum and read a comment that changed everything: “Cats thrive on routine. It makes them feel safe.” That sentence hit me hard because I realized I wasn’t giving Lulu structure. She didn’t know when to expect her next meal, and that uncertainty made her anxious. I decided to take control and start a proper feeding routine, one that would match her age, appetite, and lifestyle.

Building a Routine Step by Step

At that time, Lulu was about three months old, so I decided to feed her three small meals a day — breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I set fixed times: 8 a.m., 2 p.m., and 8 p.m. At first, she resisted. On the second day, she meowed outside the kitchen an hour early, demanding food, and I had to ignore her cute face and stick to the schedule. It was hard, but after a week, she started adjusting. By the second week, she was sitting quietly near her bowl at exactly the right time, waiting patiently. It amazed me how fast she adapted once the routine was clear.

Finding the Right Portions

Another challenge was portion size. I used to overfill her bowl because I was afraid she’d stay hungry, but that only led to leftovers and wasted food. I started measuring her meals with a small scoop — just enough for her size and age. The vet told me kittens need frequent small meals instead of large ones, so I focused on quality over quantity. The difference showed quickly: she became more active, playful, and her coat looked shinier.

Morning Rituals with Lulu

Our mornings became my favorite part of the day. Lulu wakes up before me, stretches next to my bed, and runs straight to the kitchen. As soon as I open the food cabinet, she starts her little dance — tail up, purring loudly, rubbing against my legs. I talk to her while preparing her food, and she always answers with tiny chirps as if she understands. It’s a small ritual, but it feels like a conversation between friends. Watching her eat calmly in the sunlight became my peaceful way to start the day.

Balancing Wet and Dry Food

At first, I used to feed Lulu only wet food because she loved it so much. But after reading about dental health, I decided to include small portions of dry food too. I made a habit of mixing a little dry kibble with her wet meals every other day. She didn’t like it at first, but I found a trick — adding a spoon of tuna water on top made it irresistible. Now she eats both happily, and her teeth and gums are much healthier.

Dealing with the Occasional Mood Swings

Some days, Lulu just refuses to eat. No matter what I offer, she sniffs it and walks away. At first, this used to worry me a lot, but over time, I learned not to panic. Cats have moods, just like people. I give her space and try again later. Sometimes she just wants to play before eating, other times she’s not hungry yet. Learning to respect her rhythm instead of forcing her made our bond stronger.

Treats, Snacks, and Discipline

Lulu loves treats, and I used to spoil her way too much. It took me a while to understand that treats should be part of training, not regular feeding. Now, I only give her a small treat after playtime or brushing, never randomly. She learned to associate good behavior with rewards, and it made her more responsive and well-behaved.

How Routine Changed Everything

After a few months of following a consistent feeding schedule, I noticed a huge change in Lulu. She became calmer, more predictable, and even her bathroom habits improved. She no longer meowed restlessly or begged for food between meals. Our days started to flow naturally — I knew what she needed and when she needed it. The structure brought peace to both of us.

What I Learned

Creating a feeding routine for Lulu taught me that cats, like people, need balance and predictability. It’s not just about what they eat, but when and how. A good routine builds trust and comfort. Now, every meal feels like a moment of connection — a quiet reminder that love can be as simple as a full bowl served on time.

Sometimes I still think about those early chaotic days, when I fed her every time she meowed and thought I was doing my best. I smile now because I know that structure, not randomness, is the real form of care. And every time I watch Lulu finish her meal, lick her paws, and curl up for a nap, I feel proud — not just of her growth, but of mine too.
